Opal Expo held annually in Winton is great fun for everyone! Come, experience, see and even purchase an opal or two. Australia's national gemstone, Opal, in the rough or as cut and polished stone. Here in Winton they have boulder Opal, which is unique to Queensland.

Enjoy the tailgating, where the opal miners sell their opal virtually from the back of the vehicle, to the booths and stalls displaying opal in all its form. Join in the entertainment as well as the street market. A grand dinner is held with a jewellery and fashion parade. Jewellery and dress design competitions are held and the winners are announced at the dinner.

This year the National Opal Symposium is being held in Winton, in conjunction with the Opal Expo, whish will bring opal miners from all over Australia selling their stones. Any keen jeweller or jewellery wholesaler is welcomed to attend.

Children: Children are welcome. A jumping castle and musical fence will be on show during the Symposium.

Disabled: There is access for persons with a disability. There are ramps into buildings and the gutters of the Main Street.

Miscellaneous:

The main street will be closed for three days with lots of things happening. A market will be held on one day in the main street as well as other entertainment. There will be a Jumping Castle for the children. At the Outback Regional Art Gallery, there will be an exhibition of opal jewellery and an historical interpretation about opal-mining and life in Opalton. This exhibition will run for six weeks. This will be well worth the visit. After the Expo, travel out to Opalton and do some fossicking of your own opal! Take the time to explore Winton and its many attractions.

Winton is located 1440 kilometres northwest of Brisbane on the Landsborough Highway. All roads are sealed. Flights are daily to Longreach from Brisbane and bi-weekly from Townsville. Greyhound operates daily from / to Mount Isa and from / to Brisbane.
