Cairns and Port Douglas are well known for their easy access to the Great Barrier Reef, which lies just offshore. At Cape Tribulation, just north of Port Douglas the rainforest and the reef collide. The Great Barrier Reef stretches right along the Queensland coast and is recognised as one of the world’s best diving and snorkelling destinations. In the north the warm tropical waters enhance the colours of the coral and variety of marine life. With winter water temperatures dropping to a balmy 25 degrees celsius (77F), it’s the perfect way to spend a winter’s day. Summer water temperatures rise to around 28C. It is safe to swim year-round in the tropics, however during the warmer months from November to May, additional precautions may be necessary due to the presence of marine stingers.

Beginners to experienced divers can join one of the myriad of day or live-aboard tours from Cairns and Port Douglas to explore the reef of the Coral Sea. You can snorkel or dive on the edge of the continental shelf in crystal clear water out at Agincourt Reef, feed giant cod at the Cod Hole, explore the waters surrounding a secluded coral cay, base yourself on a live-aboard dive boat or on one of the off-shore island resorts such as Green, Fitzroy, Lizard, Dunk or Bedarra. Wherever you go, colourful tropical fish, turtles, rays and even reef sharks wait to welcome you into their world.
